Whatcom County has numerous fishing opportunities near Bellingham, the Nooksack River, the San Juan Islands, lakes and more. In Bellingham there are popular trout lakes such as Padden, Toad, and Samish not to mention Lake Whatcom itself which excels in producing good numbers of smallmouth bass.

The Nooksack River in Whatcom County usually sees good returns of salmon, as well as a small run of winter steelhead. Between the Main Nooksack, which flows through Everson and Ferndale, the North Fork Nooksack, the South Fork, and the Middle Fork, the Nooksack river has enough access to satisfy most river bound anglers.

Many of the fishing lakes in Whatcom County are stocked periodically throughout the year with catchable size trout. Several lakes, such as Squalicum lake in Bellingham include Triploid trout, or large hybrid trout in the 1-1.5 pound range too.
