Local Blacktail
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:59:10 AM »
I have my heart set on chasing some blacktail this fall. The only issue is I have very little idea where to even start scouting, not to mention the complete cluster that is the big game licensing process in this state. I've knocked down plenty of whitetail back in Michigan, but that is a completely different way of hunting compared to out here. Any tips on general area would be appreciated. I have a mountain bike and plan on finding some closed logging roads and riding in. Point me in the right direction and I will be much appreciative.

Thanks,

gh

Im in the same boat,  im still going for my first deer. last year i hunted by myself on the east side for mulies and struck out. This year i plan on hunting closer to home. So far i have found google earth to be my best tool, especially for checking out terrain, clear cuts etc. I plan on going scouting soon so maybe ill have some pics to upload if i actually spot any deer.

Tons of deer in Sudden Valley!  Best hunting method is an apple in one hand and a ball pein hammer in the other...  ::)

What seasons are you guys looking to hunt?  Archery? Muzzleloader? Rifle?

Set the trail cams out at my honey hole.  While I was doing that a doe with a fawn and 3 yearlings, including a spike, were hanging around.  Hopefully the big boys will come through soon!

I'm bowhunting so everything is fair game come the season opener!

This is new to my hunting area.  I'm hoping it'll turn out to be a buck next season.  I've only seen a couple of these in my hunting career and this is the first one I've ever caught on a camera.

Nice picture. I've never seen a Guernsey/Blacktail before.

Beat me to it, Cogitator!

I had a three-point buck in my driveway tonight, right in Bham. Almost ran over the damn thing.

Hmm..

thats a cool deer pips4bucks. Ive done one scouting trip this far but the only deer i have seen were in town. I spied a couple of 3x3's in my neighbors garden the other day. Grouse season will give me a few good opportunities for scouting though.
